Thailand Sex Vacation overview; for as long as I can remember, long before I ever visited it, Thailand has had a reputation for being a naughty boy's paradise. Stories of hedonistic excess have been shared by many a man in bars across the world about Thailand's world famous nightlife services. Even people who have never visited, and never intend to visit, are aware of what is openly offered here. But what about the future of the Thai sex vacation industry?
Normal romantic relationships with Thai Ladies will always be something that many foreign men will be interested in and you can find good advice about that in my 'Dating Advice' section.
One place where you can still easily meet the more traditional ladies is online. ThaiFriendly.com is a good place to start your search for an honest Thai lady with traditional values.
Just because things have been the way they are for so long now does not guarantee that things will always be the way they are. What are the drivers that might cause the industry to change? Will a Thailand sex vacation even be possible in the years to come?
To find out my latest thoughts about Pattaya, as well as the views from around the web, just add an email address to the box below. I'll send you my e-zine update once every month or so:
I've written in previous reports about the development of Pattaya since the Vietnam War into its current form (see 'Pattaya Information' for more details), and there isn't a great deal more that I'll add here about the past. I'll concentrate more on the present and the future. What does need to be said about the past is that virtually everyone who remembers it argues that the naughty nightlife scene was even better back then than it is today. I'm not sure I agree. It was certainly better at one time in terms of cost; even the past few years have seen substantial increases in costs.
For one thing, the Baht has appreciated by around 40% against most western countries since the 2007 economic turmoil began. Add to that some inflation in prices charged by the girls (another 40 - 50%) and things really have become more expensive.
Many long-term visitors also feel that the attitude of the girls has
changed over time but on this I think most are a little unfair. I've
never read a single report or heard a single story where a long-term
visitor has acknowledged any change in his own attitude and perception.
Most long-term visitors have been stung at one time or another by a
somewhat unscrupulous individual; that taints the way that a person
looks at things thereafter.
It is also true that the girls are.... believe it or not.... human. As a long-term visitor stays in Thailand for any period of time, the excessive drinking/partying that inevitably follows (as well as the ageing process generally) means that his once proud, youthful, physique/appearance starts to head south. As that happens, the girls will naturally adjust their attitude a little.
That said, I do think that the once common sweet traditional girl is being steadily replaced a new generation of somewhat Westernised ladies. For many of us, that's exactly what we are trying to get away from!!!
As far as I can make it out, I think that there are three main things to consider when thinking about the future of the Thailand sex vacation. Firstly, how desirable is it considered to be by the Thai people. Secondly, how important is it to the Thai economy overall. Lastly, how important is it to the individual ladies involved.
Starting with the Thai
people; I think it is fair to say that the local population of any
country is not going to be particularly overjoyed to see millions of
middle-aged, single, male visitors coming to their country from all over
the world to enjoy the company of the local ladies. This is also true
I do think Thailand is an extremely tolerant country, but what annoys many Thais is the brazen, in-your-face display that goes on in the tourist nightspots. The traditional Thai way to go about this sort of business is to keep it all undercover in the same way that you would keep it undercover in your own country. The local tourist authority in Pattaya is already trying to change the image of Pattaya and attract a different kind of visitor. It is having some success with this too with many more family visitors coming from Russia and China each year.
As far as the importance of the sex trade industry is to the Thai economy overall is concerned, the surprising truth is 'not very'. The Thai economy is very much driven by its export markets. Tourism as a whole is much smaller and, within that, sex tourism is only a small part of overall tourism. Obviously there are certain local areas where the Thailand sex vacation is more popular and therefore more important to the local economy. Nowhere is that more true than in Pattaya but, as already mentioned, even here the authorities are trying to move away from it.
The last thing to consider is the girls themselves. Many of the girls come from the poorest rural areas of Thailand. They often come because they know of no other way to make sufficient money to support their needy family back home. There is strong evidence though that this necessity will not last forever. The Thai economy is growing fast and, as it does so, alternative economic opportunities will also grow.
30 years ago, the average Thai income was about 10% of that of the
typical Western income. It is currently about 25% and is still catching
up quickly. If the long-term economic growth rates continue (in Thailand
and the West), Thailand's average income will reach about 50% of the
typical Western income in the next 30 years or so. Before this happens,
the dependence on the sex industry that many girls have today will no
longer exist. At the very least you can expect much higher costs if you
want to partake.
Thailand sex vacation today is certainly a very different thing to what
it was 30 years ago. Much of the difference is due to the ongoing
development of the Thai economy in general. Thailand is no longer the
desperately poor country it once was, and it is catching up with the
West all the time. This will inevitably change the nature of the
pay-for-pleasure industry as time goes by, most notably in the form of
Many of the other countries in South East Asia have made real efforts to clamp down on the industry. In some neighbouring countries it is illegal for a Western man to take a local lady to his hotel room. This sort of policy could easily be adopted in Thailand at some point.
I do think that the current situation is as good as it ever was; it's more expensive now, but it is still easily affordable for most Westerners. In some regards it is better than ever now.... the cleanliness and overall standard of the bars/restaurants is much higher. There are now plenty of really classy places that would impress just about anyone.
There are also far more high quality hotels to choose from these days. Even the Hilton hotel group have invested in a very stylish hotel. My three favourite Pattaya hotels are:Sabai Resort, North Pattaya - cheap and very good
