This picture of Soi Buakhao was taken at about half past six, just after the sun has dipped below the horizon and the Neon lights have just turned on (my favourite time for picture taking).
This Soi is always busy no matter what time of day or what month of the year; the activity you see in the picture is typical of what you get here. Just above the couple walking hand in hand in the picture, you can just make out the sign for the Buakhao entrance to 'LK Metro'. Above that sign is the sign for 'Sugar Sugar' which is one of the popular gogo bars on the metro. 'Club Blu' which you can just see the corner of in the picture is closed now.... it struggled to get enough custom to keep it going.
Soi Buakhao itself is home to plenty of bars and restaurants but, like Second Road, it is not limited to the Nightlife scene. It is a main artery running through Pattaya and you get all sorts of shops along it. Tattoo shops, photo shops, massage shops, pharmacies, motorcycle repair shops, hotels, clothing and footwear shops and so on are all here in number.
The particular location where I took this picture is probably the busiest part of the Soi. As well as the nearby LK Metro, just behind me is the intersection of Soi Diana and Soi Buakhao. Soi Lengkee is also very nearby and is another worthwhile place to visit as it is home to a number of good restaurants.
The rooms above the shops are usually small apartments; these are the sorts of apartments that the local Thais live in. They are usually not much more than an en-suite room with a balcony. Air-conditioning is not always available and they don't usually come with any furnishings at all. These are not the sort of apartments that are typically marketed at expats or foreign visitors; the best thing about them is the price... as little as 2,500 baht per month I'm told!
